Co-operative Education and other work-related experiences
Students in the Statistics Department have the opportunity to enhance their education with a valuable mix of academic course work and workplace experience. We offer co-operative education programs for undergraduate students and for MSc students. There are no citizenship requirements for participation in these programs. We also facilitate work placements of MSc and PhD students via programs such as NSERC Engage and MITACS Accelerate.
Our undergraduate and MSc co-op programs are administered through the Science Co-op office, part of the UBC Co-operative Education Program. Another possible work experience at the undergraduate level is through an Undergraduate Summer Research Assistantship with a Statistics Department faculty member. Each year, in early February, descriptions of projects and calls for applications are sent to Statistics students and also posted on the Department website as a news item.
At the graduate level, throughout the MSc and PhD program, students gain extensive work-related experience via involvement with projects directed by individual Statistics faculty. Students who have taken STAT 550 can also work as consultants through the graduate-student-run Short Term Statistical Consulting Service (STCS), helping non-statisticians with their data analysis. Graduate students have also held internships at companies like Google.
